Today, Sheri experiences a freedom she once believed never would occur. She credits
this freedom to Jesus Christ and the 12-Step recovery program. She feels freed because drugs no longer control her.
For years, Sheri struggled with depressions. She discovered that when she was depressed, under stress, or feeling
any strong emotion, alcohol and other drugs helped her to cope. At first the drugs seemed to help, but then Sheri began to
lose control of her drug use. When she began to use, she could not stop. She felt shame about her loss of control, and the
shame increased her "need" to use.
After being arrested for driving under the influence, Sheri attended a 12-Step group as part of
her sentence. There she found people with stories just like her own. They told about the same feelings of defeat and shame,
but they also told about something more. They said that by applying the teachings of Jesus Christ through the 12 Steps, they
were overcoming their addictions. Jesus Christ was doing for them what they could not do for themselves. They assured Sheri
that if she would honestly work the program, God would change her life.
Today, Sheri has a new life.
God gave her this new life through His Son Jesus as she worked through the 12-Step program. She remains clean and sober one
day at a time through the program, but she says avoiding these patterns is only a small part of her recovery. She says, "The
important part is that working the program has taught me how to live. It has helped me to get to know and love God. Jesus
Christ changed my life through the 12 Steps!"
